The Elstead “marathon” is the highlight of an evening of fun and fitness, hosted every year in the beautiful village of Elstead in Surrey. The marathon has been running, pun intended, since 1912 making it a truly historic event for runners worldwide. The event consists of a 5.5 mile off road race and a 2 mile junior race, both starting on the village green, with stalls, food and drink to make the evening fun for all the family. The full run takes place across the local commons, with great variation in terrain and ending in a wet and muddy crossing of the river Wey! The races are traditionally followed by a friendly tug of war between local teams, culminating in celebrations and commiserations across the welcoming free houses dotted around the village. The local Scout troop have very close ties to the event, with all proceeds from the day helping to support fantastic opportunities for the local youth. The Scouts continue to organise and support the run to this day.
